What is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is the specialty of making visual content to impart messages. Graphic Design is the process of communication with people and solving problems with the support of typography, photography, demonstration and illustration. Applying visual hierarchy and page format techniques, graphic designers use typography and pictures to meet user’s specific needs and focus on the logic of showing components in interactive designs to optimize the client experience.

Graphic design plays a huge role in the modern competitive business environment. Businesses are seeking the services of graphic designers to create good and impressive marketing materials. The reason for businesses increasing their demand towards graphic items is the need for effective communication with their audiences. There are various softwares for Designers to choose, which include Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Design, Cyberlink, Vector, Google Sketch-Up, Adobe Creative Cloud, Lightroom, Dreamweaver, etc. One should have an idea of what he/she wants to do before they use this software otherwise it will be time consuming for them to generate ideas at the last minute.

Graphic designers use their creativity, technology and their artistic eye to make products and messages come alive. Regardless of whether they are working for marketing firms, corporations or independently, a graphic designer must be capable in common design software, have experience with web design, and possess strong interpersonal communication skills. If you are keen on working for a huge firm and potentially earning a high salary, an academic degree in graphic designs is a favoured qualification.Chipping in or creating sample designs while in school encourages you to assemble a portfolio that demonstrates your aptitudes and qualifications to be a graphic designer.

To become a designer, one should have the knowledge of basic programming and coding languages such as Javascript, HTML, and CSS. A Graphic Designer may have their own specialization in UI or UX. If a person specializes in UI, they focus more on aesthetic approach, which involves how users navigate through a site, app or tool by using elements such as buttons, menus, colors and images. In general, graphic designing can be divided into 11 subtypes, which is

  1. Corporate Design – official graphical design of the logo and name of a company or institution used on letterheads, envelopes, forms, folders, brochures, etc.
  2. Publishing – one simple book cover, or it can take on a life of its own and become a print dynasty.
  3. Environmental Design – designing everyday surroundings in a way that has the ability to make the space more informative, easier to navigate, and more memorable for its visitors.
  4. Advertising – Designs and graphics for advertisements in magazines, newspapers, and hoardings.
  5. Product Design – Packaging of a product such as visual elements on a toy or a package for an electrical device.
  6. Web Design – Web designers codes and generates a website including the aesthetic approach with images, layouts, and hyperlinks.
  7. Interfaces – UI and UX designers, to ease the usage of an app, tool or a website.
  8. Production Design – responsible for the overall visual look of the production.
  9. Video Game Art – Developing graphics and elements for video games.
  10. Signage – design or use of signs and symbols to communicate a message to a specific group, such as billboards, murals, street signs and store signs.
  11. Communication Design – A broader perspective in any form such as hoarding, newspaper advertisement, animation, literature, video, presentation etc.
